A heartbreaking tragedy has plunged a Quebec community into mourning after the death of a two-year-old girl on Saturday evening following an accident involving a mini-excavator on private property in Irlande, a municipality near Thetford Mines in the Chaudière-Appalaches region. The Sûreté du Québec (SQ) is conducting a major investigation to determine the precise circumstances of the accident.
Emergency services were called shortly after 8:15 p.m. on Saturday to a property near Route 165 in the municipality of Ireland. Upon arrival, first responders found the young child critically injured in the incident involving the construction equipment. Despite their efforts to provide emergency care, she was pronounced dead at the scene.
This tragic loss has deeply shaken the local community, where residents are struggling to understand the sudden death of such a young child.
According to initial reports from the Sûreté du Québec (Quebec Provincial Police), the girl was struck by a mini-excavator while on private property. Authorities have not provided further details regarding the circumstances leading up to the accident. Investigators are continuing to gather evidence to establish a complete timeline of events.
The mini-excavator operator, a man in his twenties, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. Police later confirmed that he was interviewed by officers before being released on a promise to appear in court at a later date.
At this stage of the investigation, no formal charges have been filed. However, authorities indicate that the driver could face charges related to the operation of the mini-excavator, depending on the findings of the investigation and the evidence gathered by detectives.
The investigation has been entrusted to the Major Crimes Division of the Sûreté du Québec, with the support of a collision reconstruction specialist. Investigators are meticulously examining the scene, interviewing witnesses, and analyzing physical evidence to determine the exact circumstances of this tragedy.
The police emphasize that all aspects of the case are being rigorously investigated. This includes the positions of those involved, visibility conditions, the operation of the machinery, and any other factors that may have contributed to the accident.
SQ spokesperson Audrey-Anne Bilodeau explained that, under Quebec’s Coroners Act, the Major Crimes Division automatically intervenes when a child dies, regardless of whether or not foul play is suspected. This procedure aims to ensure a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation into the circumstances of the death.
In addition to the police investigation, the Quebec coroner will also conduct an independent inquest to determine the precise causes and circumstances of the death. Coroners regularly collaborate with law enforcement in cases involving accidental or unexpected deaths, particularly those involving children.
This tragedy occurred during a particularly deadly weekend on Quebec roads. Authorities reported several serious collisions that claimed six lives in four separate accidents on Saturday. While unrelated to the tragedy in Ireland, this series of events serves as a stark reminder of the importance of safety around vehicles and heavy machinery.
